The Trinity In Matthew 28:16-20
"Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 29:16-20
In this passage, Jesus has been glorified after being raised from the dead from His crucifixion. There is power in this passage, and it's amazing how the Holy Spirit inspired the apostle John in his gospel with this crucial detail of Jesus being worshipped by those around Him, which makes what Jesus says all the more profound.
A. Jesus is worshipped by those around Him, before and after His crucifixion
B. Jesus says all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him
C. Jesus commands the disciples to baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Here are the facts:
1. Jesus proceeds from the Father (John 16:28)
2. Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (John 15:26)
Since the Son and Spirit both proceed from the Father, they are therefore one with the Father and have the same name as the Father... for example, I have my dad's last name, but I am not my dad. I am one in nature (human) with my dad and share the same last name.
This concept originates with the Trinity... the Father is not the Son, and the Son is not the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father; however, they are one in nature (God) and share the same name.
Jesus, in all His glory is instructing believers to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit because they all share one name and are therefore equal in nature, supporting the doctrine of the Trinity.
