Study 2024-2025: The Gospel of Luke
Gospel of Luke
Overview
- Author: Luke the Physician, travel companion of the Apostle Paul
- What: Luke interviewed eye-witness accounts and did his own research into the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, in addition to Jesus’ life, to compile his gospel account of Jesus (Luke 1:1-3). Luke was not Jewish but was a Gentile who came to faith in Jesus.
-When: 62 AD
-Where: Rome
-Why: Being a Gentile, Luke’s Gospel especially “bridges the gap” between Jew and Gentile when it comes to salvation, as Jesus wants all to be saved, not just Jews.

Notes
- 5:28 Levi = Matthew
- 7:30 the purpose of John was to prepare the way for Jesus, and in doing so preach repentance and water baptism
- 8:10 the purpose of parables
- 8:31 Abyss
- 9:33 look into why it says Peter did not know what he was saying
- 9:49 see if the word Master here is the same for Lord
- 13:1 as in human sacrifice?
- 13:15-16 people have a tendency to care more about literal animals than humans, and Jesus addresses that here
- 15:20 the man was still a long way off from his father’s house… and the father ran to him and embraced him. The same way we don’t have to be religious, and “good” to be approved by God because unless it’s through Jesus we can’t be approved by God. Also shows that at an instant, someone in serious sin can be embraced by Jesus and leave the life of sin to follow Him.
- 15:21 the son knows he has done wrong and does not deserve to be called the man’s child or have anything… the place of humility this comes from is refreshing, because no one is entitled for access into heaven, and it is not earned, it’s only through Jesus someone can be humble and realize that they are a sinner and nothing “good” we do gets us in.
- 20:20-26 parallels Matthew 22:15-22 + Mark 12:13-17, Jesus states that the kings of the earth collect taxes from those who are not their children. A few things here: temple tax was used in the OT with 2 Samuel 21:10, 1 Chronicles 21:1 and Exodus 30:11-16. Census was only to be taken at God’s command.
- 20:34-38 FOR TO HIM ALL (those who have faith in Jesus) ARE ALIVE
- 22:10-12 possibly John Mark’s house (author of Mark)
