The Book of Genesis
Overview
- Author: Moses
- What: The creation of the heavens and earth, and all that are in them created by God.
-When: Around 1440 BC?
-Where: Mount Sinai?
-Why: Genesis lays the foundation for the rest of not only the Bible, but lays the foundation to answering life’s most difficult questions.
Jesus OT ← → NT:
3:8 = Possibly pre-incarnate Jesus
6:16 = the Ark has a single door, Jesus in John 10:9 says He is the door/gate depending on the translation
15:1-21 = the Word of the LORD, John 1:1-14 refers to Jesus as the Word of God, and so does Revelation 19:11-16… additionally see John 8:56-58 when Jesus tells the Pharisees He’s interacted with Abraham before His time on earth
16:7-12 = the angel of the LORD; later to be revealed as God Himself in 48:15-16
21:17 = angel of God
22:11 = angel of the LORD
22:15-18 = “The angel of the LORD called to Abraham and said, ‘I swear by myself, declares the LORD…” who called Abraham, and declares who?
24:7 = the LORD, the God of heaven said this, and so does the Word of the LORD in 15:1-21
31:11-13 = angle of God
32:9-12 = Jesus made the covenant with Abraham in chapter 15
32:22-30 = Jacob wrestles with God
35:10 = the name Jacob is now named Israel, Jesus does the same thing to Peter in Matthew 16:18 when He calls Simon, Peter
35:13 = Jesus’ ascension illustrated
48:16 = Israel acknowledges that the angel of the LORD is God
49:24= God is the Sheppard, Jesus is the Good Shepherd in John 10:11-15
The Trinity Shown:
1:1-2 the word God is a plural, masculine noun (Elohim)
1:26-27 = let us make mankind in our image… plural, though God is speaking
3:8 = LORD God walked…
3:22 = LORD God said, “the man has become like one of us”
6:3 = the LORD said my Spirit… indicates that there is a distinction between the LORD and His Spirit
9:8,16 = God said… (A)…follow the alphabet, but also verse 16 God speaks in third person
11:7 = LORD said “let us”
15:1-21 = the word of the LORD came… (B)
17:1,22 = LORD appeared to him
18:1-2 = the LORD appears to Abraham, and three men show up at Abraham’s tent, Abraham also calls them Lord
21:17 = God heard, but the angel of God called to Hagar
22:16 = the LORD swears to Himself… the LORD also made the Law (Deuteronomy 19:15) state that a testimony is not valid except for the witness of 2 or 3, then the matter can be established… God couldn’t swear to Himself, by His own law He put in place, UNLESS there were 2 or 3 and not just one.
24:7 = the LORD, the God of heaven… see 15:1-21
26:24-25 = the LORD appeared to him
31:11-13 = angel of God
32:9-12 = see 16:9, the angel of the LORD said this but here Jacob refers to the angel of the LORD as the LORD
