Did God Die?

How can Jesus be God if He died? Can God die? Did God die? Before answering this question, it's important to establish 4 things.

#1. Since Jesus is fully God and man (Isaiah 9:6), He then has two natures: God and man.

#2. Jesus said that He came down from Heaven (John 6:41-42, 8:42), and also claimed to be God (John 8:58, John 10:30, John 9:35-37, Mark 14:62 referencing Daniel 7:9-14).

#3. Jesus' God is the Father, as shown in John 20:17, with the Father acknowledging Jesus is God in Psalm 45:6-8.

#4. Jesus appears to people and can have conversations with them in the Old Testament Genesis 16:7-13, Genesis 18:1-5, Genesis 32:9-32, Exodus 23:20-23, Judges 13:6-23, and Daniel 3:25.

So, Jesus always existed because He is God, and chose to take the form of a human. In His human nature, Jesus ate, slept, went to the bathroom, etc., and because of His human nature, Jesus died when He was crucified.

However, since Jesus has always existed, He did not cease to exist when His human body died. In fact, Jesus said, "The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” (John 10:17-18).

Jesus fulfilled what He said He was going to do and took up His life again through the Father and Holy Spirit in His resurrection on the third day, appearing to more than 500 people (1 Corinthians 15:3-8).

Summary: Jesus has the authority to take up His life from the dead, while being dead, meaning although His physical body was dead, He did not cease to exist nor cease to be God. Although Jesus' human body died, He still existed, and proved that He was God in the flesh by rising from the dead.
