Seeing the Light: 6. "Jesus cannot be the begotten Son of God"

Seeing the Light: 6. "Jesus cannot be the begotten Son of God."

- Muslims will object to Jesus being the begotten Son of the Father. Muslims will argue that the prophets were also considered sons of God, citing examples such as Adam and Ephraim, and that the term 'son of God' refers to a righteous person. Muslims will misuse Romans 8:14.

Romans 8:14 (KJV), "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."

- However, Romans 8:3 is neglected in this position.

Romans 8:3 (KJV), "For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:"

The Bible is clear that God the Father's begotten Son is Jesus. The word "begotten" is the Greek word Strong's G3439 and it means "I. single of it's kind 1. only, used of only sons or daughters, 2. used of Christ, denotes the only begotten son of God" (1). Even though Christians call each other brother and sister, and although we call God the Father, 'Father', we also acknowledge that we are not the son of God, or the daughter of God. We say that we are son or daughter because we are not begotten from the Father. We are only able to say we are children of God because the Father adopted us through Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:15 (KJV), "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

I'm sure you have heard the phrase, but if you have not, there is a phrase that goes, "Like father, like son". The concept of God the Father having a begotten Son is biblical and here are some references to conclude this, along with Jesus demonstrating/saying that He is one with the Father, and claiming things that only the begotten Son of God the Father could claim. All verses are in the KJV version.

Luke 1:31-33, "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

John 1:14, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

John 1:18, "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

John 3:18, "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

John 5:17, "But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

John 5:21, "For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will."

Romans 8:3, "For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:"

1 John 4:9-10, "In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Hebrews 1:5-13 verse by verse below, formatting in this manner for easier reading.

"For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, This day have I begotten thee? (PSALM 2:7)

And again, I will be to him a Father, And he shall be to me a Son? ( 2 SAMUEL 7:14, 1 CHRONICLES 17:13)

And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. (DEUTERONOMY 32:43)

And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, And his ministers a flame of fire.

But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: A sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; Therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee With the oil of gladness above thy fellows. (PSALM 45:6-7)

And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; And the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest: And they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, And they shall be changed: But thou art the same, And thy years shall not fail. (PSALM 102:25-27)

But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, Until I make thine enemies thy footstool? (PSALM 110:1)

(end of Hebrews 1:5-13)

So, addressing the claim, "Jesus cannot be the begotten Son of God."

- Jesus is the begotten Son of God; the verses above demonstrate this concept.
- Notice how many of these verses are in the singular form; there is only one begotten Son.
- Although Christians are the children of God, we are only so through the adoption of the Father through the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:15)
