Seeing the Light: 1. "If Jesus is God, why did He Pray/Who did He pray to?"
- Jesus is the promised Messiah of the Old Testament. The Messiah was to be both God and man. See Jeremiah 23:5-6 in various translations below.
Jeremiah 23:5-6 (KJV), "Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE Lord OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS."
Jeremiah 23:5-6 (NIV), "The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteous Savior.
Jeremiah 23:5-6 (The Orthodox Jewish Bible), "Hinei, the days come, saith Hashem, that I will raise up unto Dovid a Tzemach Tzaddik, and a Melech shall reign and act wisely, and shall execute mishpat and tzedakah in ha'aretz. In his days Yehudah shall be saved, and Yisroel shall dwell safely; and this is Shmo whereby he shall be called — Adonoi (Hashem) Tzidkeinu."
Notice how the LORD is saying that a righteous Branch (the Messiah) was to come from King David's lineage, which means the Messiah would be human. However, the Messiah's name is also identified as God!
So, "If Jesus is God, why did He Pray/Who did He pray to?"
- As a man Jesus prayed to the Father (Matthew 6:9-13 26:36-39, Mark 1:35, 6:41, 6:46, 14:36, Luke 22:39-44, and John 17).
- As God Jesus received and accepted worship (Matthew 2:11, 8:2, 9:18, 14:33, 15:25, 28:9, 28:17, Mark 5:6, Luke 24:52, John 9:38, and Revelation 1:18 Jesus says He lives forever and ever and Revelation 3:21 Jesus says He sits on the throne with the Father to which we are shown Jesus receiving worship in Revelation 4:9-11 and 5:14).
